Writing a novel

How to understand your characters

Characters are moody and recalcitrant. Or they are in my novels, at least. It usually takes me at least one draft to get to know the central characters, and more to understand everyone else.

Maybe they just don’t like me.

One way I’ve found that helps is a character sheet. So I’ve designed one specifically for fantasy (or it works for sci-fi/speculative fiction. Speculative is a brilliant word). May it be a light for you in dark chocolate places.
